Description: As part of Design x Nine, a student design studio, I had the opportunity to create a mural for the Waterloo School District under the guidance of our professor, who served as art director. The district commissioned two murals, and I was thrilled to design the one for their elementary school.
The concept of the mural centers around community and affirmation, with the phrase “Together we are Waterloo” featured prominently. Surrounding this message are hand-lettered words of affirmation, each uniquely crafted to fit seamlessly within the composition. A navy blue background allows the colorful lettering to pop. Whimsical illustrations of flowers, scholastic objects, and symbols of growth emerge from the base, reinforcing the mural’s uplifting, imaginative theme.
One of the best parts of this project was hearing students react to it for the first time. I think this was one of my most rewarding projects because I knew I created something that would bring them joy everyday.
